Friday 10 a.m.

Training camp started without much fanfare today.  Most of the players got to the practice fields early and seemed ready to get started.

The only no-show was Percy Harvin, the Vikings 1st round draft pick.

Phil Loadholt, who signed with the Vikings earlier this week, was about the biggest football player I've ever seen!

But most eyes were on the quarterbacks.  Both Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson are competing for the starting quarterback position since Brett Favre decided not to join the Vikings.

They both seemed to be working very hard and professionally but didn't seem to mingle with each other much.

And it should be noted that Jackson took snaps with the first team offense today.

Otherwise, practice went smoothly.  The weather was absolutely stunning in Mankato.  It was in the low 70s for the entire morning which was great.

There is still a sense of being deflated down here in Mankato, though.  Most people are talking about how different camp would have been had Favre decided to join the team.

The fan turnout was decent as well.  I would say there were at least 1,000 people there.

Friday 9 a.m.

Well, I have officially arrived in Mankato to cover the Vikings first day of training camp. Things are are definitely quieter than they thought it was going to without Brett Favre here but the big question of camp now is, who is going to be the starting quarterback for the Vikings?

Many eyes will be on Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson as they compete for the job of starting quarterback.

I haven't been down here in Mankato for training camp in three years. Not much has changed down here except for the fact that there was construction on our way down here.

I saw about 20 fans already lined up outside the locker room as early as 8 a.m. I'm sure that number would have been much larger had Favre been here.
