Bridgewater, Barr practice at rookie minicamp

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – The media got its first look at the Minnesota Vikings top draft picks in action during Day 1 of the team's rookie minicamp on Friday.

No. 9 pick Anthony Barr worked with the linebackers unit and was seen getting direction from coach Mike Zimmer at several points during practice.

And quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who was drafted with the final pick of the first round, strapped on his much-talked about gloves and threw outside at Winter Park.

"I think the big thing is just the competition level raises quite a bit, the speed of the game and then they have to learn the terminology and how fast they can catch on," Zimmer said.

Bridgewater's popularity has already taken off. He ranks No. 4 in jersey sales among rookies behind Cleveland's Johnny Manziel, St. Louis' Michael Sam and Houston's Jadeveon Clowney.

"This is just a dream come true to just be in the National Football League, and if you think about it, my mom bought a jersey, so she is single-handedly contributing to that," Bridgewater said with a smile.

"I really don't care where his jersey ranks as far as sales or anything like that," Zimmer said laughing. "We're going to bring Teddy along at the right time. I've said this before. I want competition at every spot."

Early on, Zimmer was impressed with Bridgewater's quick grasp of the offense.

"I was impressed with that part of what he did, how bad he wants to learn and it's not like, 'Hey, I'm throwing an out now.' He would say the whole formation, the whole play, what it's on and go from there," said Zimmer.

"My attitude is really to get better each and every day," Bridgewater said. "And to try and make the guys in the room better players also, and just the guys on the team, better guys. I am always willing and eager to get better each and every day."

This weekend is especially important for Barr, who is on a quarter system at UCLA. That means he will have to go back for the final month of school before returning to the team. That said, he has a clear goal in the days ahead.

"Just to absorb as much information as I can, hopefully learn all of my assignments, and hopefully I can take those things back with me and progress," Barr said.

The Vikings will host Organized Team Activities scheduled from May 28 to 30, June 3 to 5 and June 9 to 12. Their mandatory minicamp is scheduled to run from June 17 to 19.
