Brooklyn Park man gets 15 years in girlfriend's death

MINNEAPOLIS - A Brooklyn Park man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the death of his girlfriend, which he admitted took place while the two were engaged in "rough sex."

Toby Nicholas Clarke, 38, pleaded guilty to second-degree unintentional murder last August for causing the death of 36-year-old Krista Ambers.

On Wednesday, Ambers' family and a close co-worker gave victim impact statements, while Clarke addressed both his own family and the victim's family to apologize for the pain he caused.

According to the charges, Clarke called 911 around 3 a.m. on Aug. 5, 2015 to report an unconscious woman. When police arrived, Clarke allegedly claimed he and the woman were just friends.

Authorities found bruising on Ambers' arms and around her neck. She was pronounced dead a short time later. The Hennepin County medical examiner determined she died from strangulation.

Clarke eventually admitted to police he was in a relationship with Ambers for three years and that he choked her while they were engaged in rough sex.

Clarke has a history of domestic abuse charges and previously had an order for protection filed against him.
