2 women in custody after high speed chase through metro

JORDAN, Minn. - Two 24-year-old women are in custody tonight following a high speed chase that began in Minneapolis and wound through crowded interstates before turning south and ending near Jordan nearly a half-hour later.

Minneapolis Police spokesman John Elder says the pursuit began at 36th and Freemont Avenue North when officers spotted a vehicle that had been reported as stolen. The female driver took off, and ended up on I-94.

"The vehicle was involved in to crashes with other vehicles. No one was injured. We had squads that took care of the people right away," says Elder.

MnDOT cameras first picked up the compact vehicle as it wove in and out of cars while speeding west on I-94/694 and Brooklyn Boulevard. The driver led a long line of State Troopers onto I-94 westbound, then veered off onto I-494 southbound. At times the driver passed vehicles on both the right and left shoulders of the road with squads in hot pursuit.

"During the pursuit the individuals threw narcotics out of the vehicle which were immediately taken into custody by the police," says Elder.

The pursued suspect veered towards exit ramps several times, only to swerve back onto the interstate again. Finally, the driver did pull off at Highway 169 and Bloomington Ferry Road, only to get back on Highway 169 southbound a few minutes later. Eventually the fleeing driver and the pursuing law enforcement squads drove out of the range of MnDOT's camera network. Minutes later the chase ended on Highway 169 just north of Highway 21 near Jordan when the stolen car came to stop on its own because of damage suffered in the earlier crashes.

The female driver and a female passenger were taken into custody. Neither were injured in the chase.

"There's a lot of things that are really unusual about this case, the duration of it, the fact that two females were involved and the time of day," says Elder.

The woman will likely face charges of auto theft, possession of narcotics and fleeing police.
