Cell phone scam targets bank customers

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a cell phone scam.

Officials said that residents have reported receiving text messages that have been sent to cell phone owners that say, "Your bank account has been compromised. Please contact First National Bank of Walker at 218-252-8142 or 218-296-7222."

Officials said that the text messages are a scam. They advise to not text a reply or call the numbers listed.

Instead, authorities said that people should see their banker in or call the business line on Monday which is 218-547-1160.

The bank in Walker is taking steps to attempt to identify who perpetrated the scam. Be advised that even those who are not customers of the bank are getting these messages.

The dispatch center has received more than 100 calls about the scam.
