Daycare provider sentenced after child found on highway

PINE CITY, Minn. - A Pine County daycare provider will serve 30 days in jail after being sentenced for child neglect in connection with an incident last summer where a 2 year old was found wandering in the middle of a highway.

Carrie Anne Richardson, age 56, was sentenced to 2 years probation and 365 days of jail time, all but 30 days of which are stayed. Richardson must report to jail within 30 days.

Among the conditions Richardson must meet:

  • Do not leave Minnesota without written court approval
  • No alcohol/controlled substance use
  • No possession of alcohol or drugs
  • Random testing
  • Remain law-abiding
  • Make all future court appearances
  • Make and maintain contact with attorney

Investigators say Richardson was intoxicated and on prescription medicine while caring for 10 children at her Sandstone home on June 12, 2013. A girl who wasn't even 2-years-old left an outside play area and wandered down the center line of Highway 23. Vehicles swerved to avoid the child before two residents rescued her.
