How can Vikings, Packers fans spot ticket scams?

Tips for Vikings, Packers fans on spotting fake tickets

MINNEAPOLIS - It's one of the most anticipated football games in Vikings franchise history. Minnesota hosts divisional rival Green Bay this Sunday night in U.S. Bank Stadium.

Tickets for the big game are at a premium. The cheap seats will cost at least $200 per ticket. Want a seat on the lower level? That's at least $1,000 per ticket.

Minneapolis Police want to warn fans that some people will take advantage of the market and sell counterfeit tickets at a big price.

“I have seen a lot of changes in the way people make counterfeit tickets,” said Lieutenant Kim Lund.

With the rise of third party vendors and the 2007 legalization of ticket scalping in the state, Lund says fake ticket sales have been a constant in the Twin Cities. Downloadable PDF tickets has also made it easier for scammers. Even still, those do not account for all of the fake tickets.

“People tend to believe they’re getting the real thing with an actual hard stock ticket. If that ticket is falling apart in your hand though it’s probably not the real thing,” Lund said.

Police say as many as 200 counterfeit tickets were sold to people looking to attend the recent Metallica concert at U.S. Bank Stadium.

So how can you protect yourself from buying a fake ticket?

If you're buying tickets from someone on the street, police suggest taking the sellers photo, or a photo of their license. Also ask the seller if they would walk with you to the ticket counter to redeem your ticket. If they won’t do any one of those things police say they’re likely selling fake tickets.

The Better Business Bureau suggests purchasing tickets from official vendors and use payments that come with protection like credit cards rather than wire transfers or cash.

Lund also says to look closely for details as well as the text on the ticket.

"If your ticket says Live Nation on it and it’s not a Live Nation promoted concert, that's a clear sign the ticket is fake," Lund said.

The Vikings are reminding fans the only authorized outlets for Vikings football tickets are the Vikings Ticket Office, Ticketmaster and the NFL TicketExchange. Purchasing tickets from any other sources are done at the buyer's own risk and ticket selling on US Bank Stadium property is illegal.
