Man charged in death of MN bicyclist

STEEN, Minn. - A South Dakota man is charged with criminal vehicular homicide and criminal vehicular operation after a woman was hit by his pickup truck and killed while pulling her children in a bicycle trailer in southwest Minnesota Monday.

Rock County prosecutors filed the charges against 25-year-old Christopher Weber late Tuesday. They say it appears that Weber was distracted by his cell phone when he allegedly hit 33-year-old Andrea Boeve on Highway 270 near the town of Steen.

State Patrol investigators say Boeve was pulling her children on the eastbound shoulder of the highway when Weber, also headed eastbound, drove up behind her and struck the woman. Boeve's young daughters, ages 4 and 1, were riding in a trailer behind her bike. They were injured but will survive.

Weber, who is from Brandon, South Dakota, was arrested on the scene. It does not appear alcohol or drugs were involved in the fatal incident.

The defendant is expected to make his first court appearance at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
