Man charged in stabbing connected to fatal shooting

ST. PAUL, Minn. - A man is charged with second degree assault in connection with a stabbing that is linked to a fatal shooting that took place at a birthday party in St. Paul early Sunday.

Police say the 24-year-old Leevester Pauldrake Rhodes stabbed the victim, a 27-year-old Twin cities man, three times during the fight. Witnesses say Rhodes and his friend Damonta Ivy Jones arrived at the party with the victim's younger sister, who was trying to conceal a black eye.

When the victim and his brother, 32-year-old Prince Miles Pope, went outside to talk to Jones about their sister's black eye he says a scuffle broke out, which led to Pope being sucker punched and the victim getting stabbed. The victim told police that he fell back into the basement after being stabbed, and soon heard multiple gunshots. When the stabbing victim ran back up stairs he learned Pope had been fatally shot.

When questioned by police Jones told investigators that defendant Rhodes admitted to stabbing the man. Rhodes is refusing to speak with police about what happened.
