Mother charged with manslaughter in death of son

HASTINGS, Minn. - She didn't administer the beating that took the life of her 4-year-old son, but prosecutors say a Dakota County women is guilty of manslaughter for not protecting the boy.

Sha'reese Monique Miller was charged with three counts of second degree manslaughter Monday in connection with the 2013 death of her son Key'ontay Miller Peterson.

Dakota County prosecutors say the 24-year-old Miller's boyfriend, William Alphonso Warr, inflicted blunt force injuries that claimed Key'ontay's life. An order of protection had been issued mandating that Warr stay away from Miller and her two children, but she allowed him back in their life.

"When a child dies from neglect or endangerment by a parent it is referred to as manslaughter under Minnesota law," Dakota County Attorney Jim Backstrom said in a written release. "These charges alleged that Sha'reese Miller failed to protect her son from a person she knew was harming him, placing him in extreme danger by doing so, and that she failed to seek timely medical care when his life could have been saved."
