ST. PETER, Minn. - Investigators are looking into the murder of a patient at the MN State Hospital in St. Peter.
St. Peter Police Chief Matthew Peters says officers and medical personnel were called to the facility just before 8 p.m. Wednesday night after hospital security staff found an unresponsive adult male patient.
When squads arrived at the high security facility they found 41-year-old Michael Francis Douglas suffering from what are being called violent traumatic injuries.
Peters says paramedics attempted to revive Douglas but efforts were unsuccessful.
"A patient died, apparently as a result of injuries inflicted by another patient at Minnesota Security Hospital in St. Peter on Wednesday evening. Law enforcement is investigating," said Deputy Commissioner of Human Services Anne Barry in a written statement Thursday morning, "We are doing everything we can to assist them. In addition to the investigation of local law enforcement, death reviews will be conducted by the Minnesota Department of Health and the Ombudsman for Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities and a Root Cause Analysis will be required by the Joint Commission. We will cooperate fully with any and all reviews into the death of the patient served by Security Hospital."
"We express our deepest condolences to the family of the patient who died."
Officers arrested another patient, Darnell Dee Whitefeather, in connection with the incident. He is being held at the Nicollet County Jail awaiting charges.
