Police seek armed robber after gun battle

MINNEAPOLIS - Minneapolis Police hope the public can help them identify a bold armed robber who was caught on surveillance tape engaging in a shootout with a convenience store clerk.

The suspect walked into the Handy Stop at 2600 Broadway Avenue West shortly before 9 a.m. July 26 with a semi-automatic handgun already drawn. He climbs up on the counter only to discover that the clerk is armed. That clerk begins shooting, and he and the would-be robber exchange gunfire until the suspect flees the store.

Investigators say the clerk is licensed and registered to carry a firearm.

Police describe the suspect as an African American male, 27 or 28-years-old, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall with a medium build. He was wearing a brown hoodie and a black and white mask. Witnesses say he ran from the store, jumped on a BMX bike and was last seen riding away from the Loft Apartments and down 27th Street.

Police are worried about the robber's brazen actions, saying he may target more businesses.

Anyone who knows the suspect or has information on the crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or text TIP674 plus your information to 274637. Those providing tips may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
