State lawmaker robbed at gunpoint

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Police in St. Paul are searching for a suspect  after a state lawmaker was robbed Thursday night on Grand Avenue.

Spokesman Steve Linders confirms that officers responded to 917 Grand Avenue on reports of an armed robbery. The victim was State Representative Dennis Smith (R) of Maple Grove. Smith told officers that he was walking northbound on the east sidewalk of Milton Street just north of Grand, talking on his phone when he was approached by a man with a gun on his hip.

"Whenever you have a loaded gun pointed at you, you think about your loved ones and the fact that you want to live," Smith told KARE 11's Cory Hepola. "My immediate reaction was to comply with the request, have no sudden movements, try to stay calm and collected," Smith added.

Smith says the suspect pointed the gun at him and told him to "Gimme your wallet and phone.” Smith complied, and the man ran off. He then ran to Salut Bar Americain and called police. Police set up a perimeter around the area but were unable to locate the suspect.  A K-9 officer responded but was not able to pick up the robber's trail.

The suspect is described as:

  • Black male
  • 25-35 years old
  • Short hair, clean shaven
  • Wearing black, hooded sweatshirt
  • Wearing dark clothing

Anyone with information on the crime or the person responsible is asked to call St. Paul Police.
