Teens busted swiping cardboard display cake in Edina

EDINA, Minn. - If you're going to risk getting busted swiping a cake, it would be advisable to make sure it's the real deal.

Three teens in Edina obviously didn't do their homework before entering the Cub Foods at 6775 York Avenue, grabbing a display cake and sprinting from the building. An employee witnessed the bungling bakery caper and quickly called 911. Officers responded, saw a vehicle matching the one piloted by the teens, and pulled it over.

To make matters worse for the no-goodniks, it turns out that most of the display cake was actually ... cardboard. Yes, cardboard. Even if they had gotten away with the goods, the young shoplifters would not have enjoyed them very much.

An Edina Police spokesperson says Cub declined to press theft charges, instead opting to prevent the teens from entering the store in the future. The cardboard display cake was returned to its location with no obvious wear or tear.
