GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn.--Dr. Rebecca Thomley describes herself as one who was "raised to serve others" and as a result believes that volunteering is a natural part of life. She is a woman who has worked with an amazing team of people to make volunteering and serving others a natural part of life for her employees and her community.
Dr. Thomley is the Chief Executive Officer at Orion Associates Incorporated and was instrumental in initiating a grass roots movement dedicated to volunteering and providing disaster relief. This movement became the Headwaters Relief Organization.
Headwaters evolved because Dr. Thomley and her colleagues knew that they wanted Orion and Associates to be an organization that served the community and provided opportunities for all Orion employees to serve as dedicated volunteers.
The purpose and mission of the organization evolved out of an initial response to the needs in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Since then, Headwaters Relief Organization has provided much needed resources and services to victims of disaster all over the United States and has continued to expand its services to outside the U.S. by serving and partnering with orphanages in Haiti.
Dr. Thomley explains that one of the most rewarding aspects of volunteering is experiencing a "soul connection" with another individual. This connection is one that "transcends differences of race, religion, economic status and any other personal factors. It is just a basic human human connection".
Dr. Thomley's own life has been positively changed by her participation in these kinds of volunteer efforts and she truly enjoys working to provide similar experiences for both her employees and other community volunteers.
