Cost of College Less Daunting

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. -- High school seniors are busy scrubbing their Facebook sites of unflattering information as they await college acceptance letters.

Valerie Broughton of College Connectors, a service that helps families through the college application process, says students shouldn't worry as much as they have been lead to believe.

"I think it's a bit of an urban myth," Broughton said on KARE 11 Sunrise Wednesday.

Brougton says most colleges don't have time to check every applicant's Facebook page, but in certain cases, they will.

Broughton says college athletes can expect their profile will be examined, as will those of students applying to very selective programs and students applying for merit scholarships.

Some students will direct admissions officers to their pages if they want to highlight events in their life.

For the most part, though, Broughton doesn't advise students to "friend" college admissions officers, and she also suggests students check their privacy settings, as well as carefully scan what their friends post on their pages.
