MINNEAPOLIS -- More and more folks are choosing to use two wheels to get to work rather than four.
Bike Walk Twin Cities, a program of Transit for Livable Communities, says from 2007 to 2010 bicycling has jumped 33 percent in the Twin Cities. The numbers are part of a nationwide effort to compile data about non-motorized transportation.
Bike Walk Twin Cities, along with other local partners, conducts counts each year in September from from 100 locations to measure changes in biking and walking.
Data collected from the U.S. Census helps reinforce those statistics. From 2005 to 2009, Minneapolis has seen a steady climb in bicycle commuters with an increase of 63 percent and 86 percent of people in St. Paul.
An event next month hopes to encourage even more to leave the car in the garage.
Bike Walk Twin Cities is hosting "Bike Walk Week" in June. The week will include bike clinics, rides, and then on June 9th, the hope is everyone will choose their bike or their walking shoes rather than their car.
