Fish for free in Minnesota state parks

Minnesota is making it easier than ever to go fishing this summer.

Most state parks have made it free to fish from shore, so those without a license or a trout stamp can still cast a line. Limits still apply on the size and number of fish that anglers can keep.

Many state parks are also lending out free fishing kits, including a rod and tackle, on a first-come, first-served basis.

“We’ve eliminated some of the barriers that were keeping today’s busy families from getting out fishing,” said Erika Rivers, director of Minnesota state parks and trails, in a Monday press release.

Beginners or those who need to brush up on their fishing skills can sign up for the I Can Fish! program to learn the basics of casting and knot-tying.

A map of free fishing locations is available online.
