MINNEAPOLIS - Food trends are constantly changing , and there are several products becoming more and more popular in the Twin Cities.
Minneapolis was recently named the 6th best city to "Live the Organic Foodie Lifestyle" by food and lifestyle website Organic Authority. For the complete list click here.
Whole Foods Market in Minneapolis says they are seeing a high demand for organic food. According to the Organic Trade Association, U.S. sales of organic food and beverages have gone up from $1 billion in 1990 to nearly $27 billion in 2010.
So, which foods should you always buy organic? Lauren Kebschull with Whole Foods Market says to always go organic with any fruit or vegetable where you eat the skin. The Dirty Dozen is a good list to follow.
Another emerging trend comes in the form of health drinks. Both Kombucha and coconut water are gaining popularity.
Kombucha is a handmade tea that is fermented for 30 days. Proponents of the drink say it supports your immune system, fights aging and can even keep your skin and hair healthy, among other things. Kebschull says research hasn't been done to prove many of those claims, however.
The drink has sparked some controversy. On the bottle of the "Synergy Brand" is a warning reading, "Due to the fermentation, this product may contain trace amounts of alcohol (less than 0.5%)."
Kombucha is also made at home by some people. Whole Foods Market even offers classes in the store on how to make it.
Coconut water is referred to as "nature's sports drink." Kebschull says the drink is high in electrolytes and has 15 times the amount of potassium than a banana. She says it's best served cold right after you workout.
