It seems every day we're hearing of a new diet promising to help you lose the pounds: Paleo, South Beach, Mediterranean, Adkins and more. By now you might have heard of the Blood Type Diet.
Dr. Peter D'Adamo created the diet and many other doctors recommend it, including Dr. Suneil Jain.
"Healthy foods can be stressful to the body if you're not eating to your blood type," Jain said.
That stress is caused by how lectins in our blood respond to proteins in food. When those lectins don't like the proteins, we feel it.
"Quite common problems [like] bloating, indigestion, heartburn, constipation, diarrhea, loose stools, headaches, joint pain and problems with sleep and mood," Jain said about possible adverse effects of not following the diet.
The blood type diet is supposed to help fix those problems. And it's done by eating based on your blood type.
Here's a quick rundown of the Blood Type Diet says you should eat and avoid:
Eat: lots of protein
Avoid: dairy and gluten
Eat: fruits, vegetables, legumes
Avoid: beef and most meat
Eat: green veggies, eggs and low-fat dairy
Avoid: corn and wheat
Eat: seafood, dairy and veggies
Avoid: alcohol and caffeine
Remember, these are just guidelines, Dr. Jain said. "You can still indulge. It's not the end of the world. You have to be conscious of it and if you're doing it everyday or doing it frequently, that's when it becomes a problem," he said.
