Should women give up their strenuous exercise routines while pregnant?
Dr. Donald Wothe, a pregnancy specialist with Allina Health, says limiting exercise depends on what you’ve been doing before you become pregnant. If you continue to do that with a few exceptions, you can continue exercising during your pregnancy. The exceptions are, you don’t want your temperature to rise too high, and you don’t want to exercise to exhaustion.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend 20-30 minutes of exercise every day of the week for pregnant patients.
But Dr. Wothe does not advise contact sports because of the possibility of injuring the baby.
Too much exercise can affect your baby while pregnant. You should check with your provider before beginning an exercise program while pregnant.
Dr. Wothe says the main thing to avoid is over-heating during exercise while pregnant. If you are exercising and you feel pain, you should immediately stop.
