NOWTHEN, Minn. - A child just shy of her first birthday was struck by a vehicle being driven by her grandmother Friday afternoon.
Authorities say the incident happened around 12:22 p.m. on the 5500 block of Old Viking Boulevard Northwest.
When deputies from the Anoka County Sheriff's Office arrived on scene, the young girl was partially underneath the tires of a vehicle, after being backed over.
The driver, identified as a 54-year-old woman, said she was the child's grandmother.
Deputies learned the girl and her mother were in the backyard of the residence, when the mother stepped inside for a moment. The grandmother was leaving the garage to head to an appointment and didn't realize the girl had wandered over near her vehicle.
As the grandmother backed up the car, the child was struck.
The girl was transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment but authorities say she is expected to survive.
Anoka County officials say alcohol is not a factor in the accident.
The incident remains under investigation.
