'Firefighters for Healing' host first gala

MINNEAPOLIS - It was a night of hope and healing this weekend in downtown Minneapolis. The first-ever "Firefighters for Healing Red Tie Gala" took place Saturday at the Exchange Club.

KARE 11's Alicia Lewis had the honor of emceeing the fundraiser.

The organization began five years ago to help young burn survivors, and was started by a Minneapolis firefighter who had a firsthand understanding, as a burn survivor himself.

"I ended up in a burn unit, there I met two kids that helped me get through my experience, and when I got out of that, I saw these two kids having to go through what I had to go through, so I figured there was more we needed to do for these guys," said Jake LaFerriere, founder of Firefighters for Healing.

Organizers say they're able to offer support to burn survivors in ways that insurance companies and even caretakers, may not be able to.

The Red Tie Gala raised more than $100,000.
