FRIDLEY, Minn. - The State Patrol is investigating a fatal rear-end crash that killed a husband and wife just east of Fridley on Interstate 694 late Friday night.
Family told KARE 11 that Patrice Hooks, 31, and her husband, Wilbur, were killed in the crash. They also said that Patrice was four and half months pregnant. The couple's 2-year-old boy was also in the car, but he suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to State Patrol.
"It's really devastating that he will grow up without his parents, but he has a very, very big family on both sides," said Brenda Hunter, Patrice Hooks' aunt. "It's just kind of coping with the news that she is no longer with us. And trying to move forward."
Witnesses said the car was going at least 100 miles an hour when it slammed into the back of a semi on eastbound I-694 near Matterhorn Drive. The crash occurred at about 8:15 p.m. on Friday night.
"What was going on in that car, what the intentions or circumstances were, we don't know because the only two adults were killed and died at the scene," said Lt. Eric Roeske.
Someone with the Anoka County Family Services is watching after the child until they can pick him up, family said.
The driver of the semi was not hurt.
The crash forced the shut down of lanes starting at Central Avenue. The closure lasted several hours, authorities said.
