Job Swap with Rena: Executive Housekeeper
"Can you check the status in 731 and 735?," Amy Reierson says over the two-way radio. Amy is getting her staff on task this morning. She is a self-described control freak and it's noted when she sees the pillows in the public area of the hotel. "It kind of looks like someone just rolled around on these," says Amy as she starts to fix them. Control freak is a great quality to have when you're the Executive Housekeeper at a high-end hotel. Amy notices the little details. "When they get snagged I get scissors because that drives me nuts too," she says. Today...I'm in training. "First I need to give you a nametag," Amy tells me. "I'm official now. The executive housekeeper no less," I say. "And, a radio so you're constantly in contact with the front desk." "Are they going to bug me all day?" "Pretty much." "Alright, let's go." Amy makes sure the show rooms are clean for any tours that will come through. The other rooms are handled by her staff of housekeepers. We turn all the lights on and notice the bed doesn't meet Amy's standards. Time for my first lesson. "First rule in housekeeping is no linen ever goes on the floor. We put everything on chairs so it doesn't get dirty," Amy explains. Who knew there was so much that goes into making a bed? Three sheets, five pillows and a comforter and you start with crisp hospital corners. It's something I'm having a hard time grasping. "We want these to be the equivalent of a fitted-sheet to stay on the bed when people sleep," Amy tells me. "Oh, I have an idea. Why don't we buy fitted sheets?," I ask. "We don't like fitted sheets," she says. I finally catch on, sort of. We add the pillows and we're done. "So the bed looks good. Now we can check the bathroom," says Amy. We need to make sure it's clean and stocked with all the amenities. My first task is to clean out the tub. "Okay and that's pretty much the process," says Amy as I make a face. "Do you want some gloves?," she asks. "No, it's fine really. I'm ready, what do we do now?" But before Amy can move on, I make a fascinating discovery. "What's this?," I ask. "That is a remote," she says. It's a television inside the bathroom mirror!! "It's the Today Show!," I exclaim! I'm suddenly struck with a brilliant idea. "Can we go through all the rooms and put KARE 11 on?," I ask. "No," says Amy. I guess there's some strange rule about not watching T.V. while you work.
