Bug bites, sunburns, bumps and bruises come with all the joys of summer fun. No matter what your age, summer fun and safety go together.

Park Nicollet Clinic Pediatrician Ellen DeVries, MD visited KARE 11 Sunrise to offer some summer safety tips.

  • Don't let the bugs bite! Bug bites aren't just itchy bumps and annoying rashes-they could mean Lyme disease or West Nile virus.

The CDC recommends products registered by the US EPA for both mosquitoes and ticks - DEET works the best.

Lyme disease is caused by the bacteria called a spirochete that is transmitted by deer ticks. DEET most effective repellent of ticks.

West nile virus is transmitted by mosquitoes amd conventional protection is DEET & Picaridin.

  • Here comes the sun. What's the best defense against UV rays and how do you treat sunburn?

    The ABC's of sun protection:

A = Avoid sun at peak hours (10 to 3) B = Block with effective sunscreen C = Cover up--Even sunscreens do not block out all the rays

Most people receive 80% of lifetime exposure to the sun by 18 years of age and 7,600 people die each year from melanoma.
