Search for missing MN hikers ramps up

IDAHO SPRINGS, Colo. - Search and rescue teams are using a Blackhawk helicopter, snowmobiles, skiers and snowshoers in an effort to find a missing father and son near Echo Lake west of Denver.

Authorities say 51-year-old Damian McManus and 19-year-old Evan McManus, who are from St. Louis Park, Minn., were last heard from on Wednesday when they embarked on a hike. Their snow-covered SUV is still in the parking lot, but the McManus' are nowhere to be found.

Alpine Rescue Team spokesman Bill Barwick said Monday that a search crew of 20 people and a handful of dogs resumed the search at 8:30 a.m. mountain time. He says it's unlikely the pair was outfitted for the challenges presented by the Rockies, and laments that it has snowed every day since the father and son left on their hike Wednesday. That snow covered any tracks the two may have left, complicating the job for searchers.

Barwick says the two men left for a camping trip on Wednesday and were due back on Sunday. They had driven to Colorado from Minnesota and planned to stop and hike along the way as part of their father-son trip for spring break. He tells KARE 11's Boua Xiong that search crews will work until the Sheriff calls them off the mountain.
