Tart, tangy summer drink makes a splash

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Looking to add something tart or tangy to your Memorial Day table? Why not create your own version of something that has been popular since Colonial times: the "shrub" cocktail!

Tamra Kramer, owner, VOM FASS Mall of America store, joined KARE 11 News @ 4 with some of their fan favorites.

VOM FASS (rhymes with sauce)— means "from the cask" or "on tap" in German. The European specialty food store is now open at the Mall of America and at Kowalski's Woodbury, and sources products from small, European family-run farms, vineyards, orchards and distilleries, using organic farming methods and sustainable agriculture.

The shrub cocktail, which is an old fashioned (Colonial era) cocktail made with vinegar that's experiencing a resurgence. Shrubs, or "drinking vinegars," are popular throughout many cultures and in colonial America were often used as a way to preserve fruit at harvest. In more recent times, they have found their way into great cocktail bars around the country as an interesting alternative to citrus in drinks.

How to make a shrub:

VOM FASS Strawberry Shrub

2 c. Vom Fass Strawberry vinegar

3/4 c. granulated sugar (or to taste)

Combine in a covered container and shake until sugar has dissolved. Use as a base for tart, refreshing non-alcoholic drinks (Just mix with sparkling water) or add a lovely acidic backbone to a Bourbon or gin cocktail.

Mix it up to make a delicious shrub cocktail:

Summer Harvest

1.75 oz. VOM FASS Yahara Bay gin

.75 oz. VOM FASS Strawberry Shrub

.5 oz. VOM FASS Cerises Rouge Cherry Brandy Liqueur

Each VOM FASS shop encourages experiential shopping — sampling of its oils, vinegars, spices, wines, spirits and liqueurs before purchase — and many can be tasted on tap, directly from the cask.

Another store will open this summer at the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes in Maple Grove.
