WADENA, Minn. - A teenager is dead after her ATV rolled in central Minnesota Monday.
Wadena County Sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a rollover accident at the intersection of Apache Ave and Cree St. in Wadena Township just before 6:30 p.m. First responders arrived on the scene and found a Polaris Ranger side by side ATV that had rolled onto the driver's side.
The driver of the ATV, 16-year-old Christine Kaye Alberts of Wadena, sustained severe head trauma and was transported to Tri-County Hospital by ambulance where she later died as a result from her injuries.
A 15-year-old female passenger was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Sheriff Michael D. Carr says the preliminary investigation suggests that the ATV was traveling south on Apache Avenue at approximately 20 mph when Alberts swerved towards the ditch then over-corrected, causing the vehicle to roll. Both Alberts and her passenger were ejected from the vehicle.
The sheriff says neither the driver or passenger was wearing a seatbelt or helmet.
