Thieves steal trailer from North Branch war vet

NORTH BRANCH, Minn. -- Sergeant John Zaffke is the kind of guy, who earns his wants.

"Me and the wife we've always wanted a nice chunk of land," Zaffke said Thursday night from his family home in North Branch.

After four years of active duty with the Army, including a tour in Afghanistan Zaffke made that dream happen when he and his wife bought 80 acres in Pine County near the small town of Bruno.

They made it even sweeter two weeks ago when they bought a trailer so the whole family could come up north.

"Everybody wants a cabin in the woods, this was my palace," Zaffke said of the 23-thousand-dollar trailer.

It was perfect.

Perfect for the weekend hunting he was already planning in his mind with his 7-year-old son.

"Having our own land, our own place to stay, it's mine. I've earned it over the years, I've done my share," Zaffke said.

He went up last Friday to put the finishing touches on the place when it happened.

The trailer had been stolen off his land.

"I just started shaking, couldn't believe it," Zaffke said.

Thieves had busted the lock on the hitch and made off with it.

Sergeant John Zaffke earned his simple wants.

Only to have them taken away on the soil he defended.

"It's completely wrong, I've done a lot for this country, for people, my kids and they just took a dump right on it," Zaffke said.
He did have the trailer fully insured, but he says that isn't the point.

So, if you have any information the Pine County Sheriff's Department can use in helping out who did this please call them at 320-629-8380.
