Woman killed by Green Line train identified

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Authorities have released the name of a woman struck and killed by a train on the new Metro Transit Light Rail Green Line Sunday.

Shauna Buchanan, age 42, was struck as she walked across the tracks near Westgate Station on the 3400 block of University Avenue Southeast just before 10:15 a.m. Investigators say it appears Buchanan, a Minneapolis resident, was wearing headphones and likely didn't hear the approaching train.

Buchanan was declared dead on the scene.

Metro Transit spokesman Bruce Henry says warning lights were operating at the time of the fatal accident, but some passengers say more is needed to warn people of an approaching train.

Sunday's fatality was the first in the Green Line's short history.
