Mall of America unveils new grand entrance

The doors to the new grand entrance on the mall's north side opened at 6 Monday morning.

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - After more than a year of construction, the Mall of America officially unveiled a large expansion Monday morning. The doors to the new grand entrance on the mall's north side opened at 6 a.m.

The three-story expansion features two floors of retail stores and a third story dining area called "Culinary Up North."

The expansion includes the JW Marriott hotel to the left and an office tower to the right of the entrance.

While the new retail space is waiting to be filled, mall officials are covering those walls with displays from local artists.

The mall is also adding mall-wide wifi and paperless valet service for the first time.

Mall officials say buses, taxis and shuttles will begin dropping off tourists at the new grand entrance starting Monday.

"When people walk into that front door, it will be an experience like none before, because you have this sense of this very special place," said Dan Jasper, vice president of communications for the mall. "It'll be festive and it will be fun, and our guests are really gonna enjoy it."

Before the expansion Mall of America already had more retail shops than any other mall in the nation with 520 stores.
