Man who ran over girlfriend arrested

MINNEAPOLIS - A man is now in custody, after being charged in a domestic assault, where he allegedly drove over his girlfriend and fled the scene.

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office charged 50-year-old Jeffrey Cruz on Friday with first-degree assault, criminal vehicular operation and for fleeing the scene of a crime while Minneapolis officers continued to search for him.

According to a tweet from the department, a resident spotted Cruz and called 911, leading to his arrest on Sunday.

Charges say police were called to a residence at 9:50 a.m. Tuesday near the alley on the 3100 block of 23rd Avenue South.

The woman told officers she was trying to stop Cruz from driving drunk but he insisted he only had a couple of beers and accused her of trying to get him in trouble.

Officers at the scene told Cruz to leave but not drive.

Then, about 20 minutes later, police were called back to the scene because the couple was arguing in the alley behind the home.

Police told them to stay away from each other. Cruz told officers he was going to walk to another place, according to the complaint.

At 10:42 a.m., police were called back a third time to the address by a witness who said he just videotaped Cruz running over the woman with a van.

Officers arrived to find the 49-year-old woman with significant injuries and rushed her to the hospital.

She was diagnosed with bleeding on the brain, fractured left ribs, a collapsed left lung, a broken jaw and fractures to her spine and sternum.

Witnesses told the police the woman stood with her back to the van and Cruz kept inching the vehicle forward, as she kept moving. She turned around and put her hands on the van's hood. Then suddenly, Cruz accelerated, knocking the woman to the ground and running over her as he fled the scene.
