1 dead, 1 critical in Chicago workplace shooting

CHICAGO - Chicago police say one man is dead and another is in critical condition after a shooting inside a downtown high-rise office building Thursday.

Police spokesman Martin Maloney says police called to the Bank of America building Thursday morning found two men on the floor in an office.

Police say the 54-year-old victim, identified as Arrowstream CEO Steven LaVoie, was taken to a hospital in critical condition, while a 59-year-old man described as the offender was pronounced dead at the scene. Early reports suggest the shooter had been demoted, and shot his boss before turning the gun on himself.

"What we have here is a workplace violence issue," Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy told WMAQ. "Apparently there's a technological company on the 17th floor. They've been undergoing a downsizing. They've demoted a number of people.

No other details were immediately released, but an officer came out of the building in the city's business district saying the situation was contained around 10:40 a.m.

A worker in the building says building security sent an email around 10 a.m. saying there was a security situation in the lobby and asking them to stay at their desks.
