Around the world, workers are celebrating May Day.

May 1 is traditionally a day for blue collar workers to rally. The tradition is alive and well in much of Europe, Asia and Latin America.

A protest in the gambling enclave of Macau, China turned violent when demonstrators fought with police.

Some police officers fired shots in the air.

The rally protested alleged corruption by the Chinese appointed government and for more rights for workers.

In Italy, thousands of workers marched on May Day.

In Rome, the leader of one labor union said people should unite against terrorism and not underestimate it.

He said terrorism brings no benefits to people who work.

Marseille, France was the site of one of the 250 demonstrations that took place around the country.

One man said this May Day is important because of the upcoming election.

Another marcher said she's worried about workers' buying power.

People are having to work longer to make the same wages they made several years ago.

And in Vienna, Austria, about 100,000 people packed the square in front of city hall to listen to speeches from Austrian leaders.

Police on Tuesday fired tear gas canisters to prevent hundreds of leftist protesters from marching to Taksim square to mark the 30th anniversary of a deadly May Day rally.

Authorities declared the area off-limits to protesters but allowed a handful of union leaders to lay wreaths at the square, where unidentified gunmen opened fire on tens of thousands of demonstrators during a May Day gathering in Istanbul in 1977. The incident left 34 people dead, most of whom were killed in a stampede.

Police, carrying riot shields and wearing gas masks, used tear gas to prevent hundreds of protesters from reaching the site. Police dispersed a group of 300 protesters in Besiktas district and detained more than 80 them, local media said.
