Firearms buffs flock to Oklahoma for annual machine gun camp
Have you ever wanted to shoot a machine gun? For a lot of people the answer is yes, and every year in the third week of June they got to Oklahoma for their big chance. There are a growing number of people who wouldn't miss Mike Friend's Oklahoma Full Auto Shoot for anything. This year organizers rigged a mini-van with explosives and sent it tumbling down a hill. They rigged a remote hillside near Wyandotte with enough dynamite to hear from space, all for machine gun owners like Bill Stover who brought his collection to shoot and rent. From every era they come: Vietnam, Iraq, and X-Box too. Greg Pennington proudly says his son will soon be able, "to tell everybody on X-Box Live that he's actually shot the guns on X-Box." Zander White has been bugging his dad for months to come here and shoot. "He loves machine guns. He wants to shoot everything here," his dad explained. Participants leave it to outsiders to discuss the state of our culture or the environmental impact on the hillside they're filling with lead. They just want to shoot and they don't let anything rain on their parade. Mike Friend says the Full Auto Shoot has become so popular that he's considering expanding to two events per year.
