MINNEAPOLIS -- Some folks in northeast Minneapolis have a sense of humor about the brutal cold.
Tom Grotting posted a photo on the Facebook group, "I Love NE Minneapolis" on Friday of two pairs of frozen pants. The jeans stand on their own in the frigid weather. Grotting propped them up near the road on Columbia Parkway.
"I think a few years he's been doing it now. And this year he posted on Facebook and sort of dared people to do it too," said neighbor Jolana Bernhardt.
Bernhardt saw the post. Sunday, her family also froze two pairs of pants and placed them among their patio furniture.
"I just ran them through the washing machine, brought them out after the spin cycle. It took a couple minutes to get them to freeze. Then they were pretty easy to stand up once they started to freeze," she said.
Grotting told KARE 11 on the phone that he got the idea from his brother and has been doing it for a few years as "lowbrow entertainment."
Since Grotting's post Friday, many other northeast Minneapolis residents have joined in the fun.
"Of course I had to jump at it," said Randall Johnson, who placed a pair of frozen pants at the intersection of 16th Ave. NE and 2nd St. NE.
"A lot of friends say they saw it so it's really neat. It's northeast. It's just kind of what we do," he said.
Johnson hopes others in Minneapolis will also create their own versions outside.
Bernhardt added, "I just think it's a fun thing to do. It's cold in Minnesota and, you know, we can make our pants stay up."
