New closures slowing metro motorists down

New closures frustrate metro motorists

MINNEAPOLIS – On Monday, the I-94 north metro project got underway where southbound Highway 252 to eastbound Interstate 94 will be closed for bridge work.

"We're going to be replacing the bridge deck over I-94 West,” said Dave Aeikens with the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Going south on 252 into Minneapolis, he and MnDOT suggest taking 252 to 694 to Highway 100. And then take that to 394 into the city.

But the one detour MnDOT does not recommend is driving through back roads and neighborhoods because they say often times it causes more problems than it solves.

Another big project that will impact many motorists involves ramps from both eastbound and westbound I-94 to I-394 westbound. Westbound I-94 to Westbound I-394 will be reduced to a single lane, and the ramp from eastbound 94 to 394 west will completely close. Highway 55 might be a good detour.

Also good to keep in mind is that the 394 HOV reversible lane will be used for 'all' motorists traveling that direction.

"So if you're a MnPASS customer you won't be charged but everyone will have access to it as they go westbound,” said Aeikens.

Got all that?

"Download some good music, sit back and relax, you'll get home eventually,” said north metro motorist Dana Davis.

If you are looking for other options to get around, Aeikens suggests carpooling and taking mass transit.

"The most significant project we are dealing with is 94. Our experience this morning is that transit that services that corridor downtown were arriving before they were scheduled," said Drew Kerr with Metro Transit.

He says mass transit is a great option whether it's construction season or not.

"Every person in a metro transit bus or train or vehicle is not on the road so we can move people a lot more efficiently and obviously anything we can do to increase that efficiency of our roadways will lead to better travel times for everybody,” said Kerr.

Aeikens says it usually takes a week or two before the traffic settles.

The 94-394 ramp closure goes to mid-June. The 252-94 ramp closure goes through mid-July.
