ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Minnesota Department of Transportation has picked a Wisconsin firm to build the foundation of the new St. Croix Crossing south of Stillwater.

Jon Chiglo, MnDOT's project director for the bridge, says Edward Kraemer and Sons of Plain, Wis., won the bidding Monday with a bid of about $36.7 million.

Foundation work will start next month and be completed in early summer 2014. Chiglo says Kraemer is eligible for incentives if the work is done by early 2014.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports the work includes building five piers to a height of 15 feet above normal river elevation and eight 9-foot-diameter shafts per pier, drilled to a depth of 120 feet.

Construction of the bridge superstructure is scheduled to start in 2014.
