MINNEAPOLIS -- The City of Minneapolis is conducting a long-term, comprehensive air-quality study. They will sample at 120 locations throughout the city. Sampling will occur four times a year over the course of the next two-years.
The first sampling event will take place November 4th through the 7th. The samples will be analyzed for 77 different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that will give us a portrait of the air quality in Minneapolis and allow us to focus our targets in air pollution reduction efforts.
They are asking for volunteers who live in the City of Minneapolis to place air samplers at their place of residence, and in particular the areas on the attached map highlighted in red.
Volunteers will need to have a location outside and off the ground where they could place the sampler (i.e. a porch, table, chair). The sites cannot have people who may smoke near the sampler. For example, the shared patio of an apartment complex would not be a good location.
The study will be using Summa canisters, which are stainless steel electropolished (or "summa" polished) passivated vessels used to collect a whole air sample. To collect a sample, the Summa canister valve is opened and the canister is locked in a designated area for a period of time (for our study, this is 72 hours) to allow the surrounding air to fill the canister and achieve a representative sample. The valve is closed before the canister is sent to a laboratory for analysis.
Volunteers need to sign a consent form and attend one of the following short demonstrations before taking the canister to their residence.
- Tuesday, October 29th 5:30pm at Pace Analytical - 1700 SE Elm St, Minneapolis
- Wednesday, October 30th 11:30am at Pace Analytical - 1700 SE Elm St, Minneapolis
- Thursday, October 31st 11:30am at City of Minneapolis Public Service Center - 250 S 4th St Room 414, Minneapolis
Volunteers will also need to be able to return the canister on November 8th during regular business hours to either:
- Pace Analytical - 1700 SE Elm St
- City of Minneapolis Public Service Center - 250 S 4th St
Volunteers will need to place the sampler outside of their residence November 4th- 7th. Interested volunteers can email Jenni at firstname.lastname@example.org and include their residence address with zip code.
