A head-on collision between two vans in New Brighton killed both van drivers. One of the dead was a U-S Navy veteran who was driving two fellow veterans home after appointments at the V-A Medical Center in Minneapolis. One of the passengers in the veterans' van told an ambulance crew that 79-year-old Richard Carroll of Center City had some kind of medical emergency before he lost control of the van and crossed the median. Carroll and the driver of the other van, 38-year-old Bobbie Tomlin of Mahtomedi, died at the scene. Two veterans in the van Carroll was driving were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis with injuries. Richard Kerr was in critical condition and 76-year-old Bob Butte was stable. The crash happened just before two this afternoon where Interstate 35W meets County Road 88 in New Brighton.
