Fish takes a bite out of kid
There are a lot of cool things about being a kid in Minnesota, not the least of which is taking a swim in any one of our great lakes. Paris Copeland got his wish for a swim last Monday at Lake Calhoun. He went with his family and said he spent almost all of his time in the water. He had no idea that his ideal day would turn into the day he'd like to forget. "There was tons of blood," Paris said. Seems a big fish, most likely a muskie or northern pike, took a bite out of Paris, mistaking his leg for lunch. "I felt pain and I run back to my parents and then, we went home," Paris remembered. Paris' mom recalls the situation too, and feels bad that her family caused quite the ruckus on the beach. "I wonder how many people we freaked out," Westy Copeland said, "it was like jaws." But what scared the heck out of this family shouldn't scare you out of the water. Ron Schara of Minnesota Bound says this is not something we need to worry about. "This is such a rare event; it's certainly not worth staying out of the water," Schara said. The big fish of Lake Calhoun, and 20 other city lakes, is the muskie. It can grow to 30 pounds or more, it has razor sharp teeth and a pretty nasty disposition. But, its prey isn't usually people. A bite like this is very rare. "This fish is just cruising along looking for something to eat and saw the flash of an ankle and thought it was time to eat and went bam!," Schara said. A fish's split second chomp for lunch almost changed the mind of Paris Copeland about swimming but after three days his scar isn't as much of a pain as it is a trophy. "Maybe he'll be a fisherman and he can just brag about this for the rest of his life," Schara hoped.
