Lakeland lawyer restrains intruder
A suspect is in custody, hospitalized, after leading police on a wild crime spree across state lines. What ended in Lakeland began across the river in Hudson, Wisconsin. Around 9:00 Friday night, Hudson police went to serve a warrant on a 23-year-old Lino Lakes suspect who was staying at an apartment complex on the fifteen-hundred block of Ward Avenue in Hudson. Hudson police say he was wanted for fleeing officers the night before. Officials say the suspect, armed with a semi-automatic assault rifle, came out shooting. In an exchange of gunfire with police, the suspect was wounded but got in a vehicle and drove to Minnesota. Chased by police, the suspect crashed into a street sign on the eleven-hundred block of Rivercrest Road in Lakeland. The suspect then fled on foot. Leland Klanderman was the first to encounter the suspect in Minnesota. He was standing on his deck in Lakeland when he says the suspect, "... kind of stumbled out [the] hostas and down on the deck." He says, the suspect, "?marches over to me really determined and swings a black assault rifle? and about a foot and half in front of my face says, 'I want your car. Give me your keys right now.'" Klanderman told the man he'd get his keys from inside the house. But instead, he and his wife, Robin, escaped out another door. He says, "He could have shot me for all I know." Unable to get a vehicle there, the suspect tried a second residence, argued with that homeowner, but failed again. So he burst into the home of 37 year old Keith Radtke on the thirteen-hundred block of Old Toll Bridge Road. Radtke and his wife were in the living room, having just put their three sons down to bed. The suspect demanded that Radtke and his wife go into the garage and get in the car. Washington County Sheriff Bill Hutton says, "At which point the husband saw an opportunity, knocked the weapon from the individuals hand." Hutton says Radtke wrestled with the suspect. But then the suspect shot Radtke in the back with a second gun, a handgun he had concealed. However, Radtke was still able to hold the suspect until police arrived. One of Radtke's neighbors, Tony Eggink says Radtke, "...saved a lot of trouble because if they had got into the car, who knows what would have happened." Hutton says, "What a huge act of bravery." Radtke is at Regions Hospital in Saint Paul in good condition. In a statement, his family thanks law enforcement for their great work. Police have not identified the suspect, but he is in custody, hospitalized at Regions in fair condition. Charges against the suspect could come as soon as Monday.
