The City of Minneapolis said it won't appeal a Hennepin County District Court ruling ordering the city to cancel tickets and give refunds to 167 people cited when cameras caught their vehicles running red lights.
The court ordered the city to refund $142 fines paid by the vehicle owners and have the offense removed from their records. The ruling came after the Minnesota Supreme Court said using the PhotoCop" system was illegal because it targeted car owners rather than drivers.
The city says its decision not to appeal applies only to the 167 people who contested their convictions. It isn't clear if the city will have to repay another 15,000 to 20,000 people who were ticketed and paid their fines.
The intersection cameras were turned off after eight months when the Minnesota Supreme Court said the system was illegal.
