The Minnesota State Patrol confirmed Monday that a fatal car crash was caused by a teenager using her iPod while driving.

Kylie Grayden and Kelly Phillips, both seniors at Minnetonka High School, died when their car went off the road in Carver County in September.

Mitch Grengs, Kylie's cousin, survived. He broke his neck and fractured his spine in the crash.

Grengs told KARE 11 in November that he thought his cousin was either using an iPod or cell phone at the time of the crash. A State Patrol investigation confirmed that.

"We have to remember the primary reason we're behind the wheel is to get from point A to point B, and that requires our undivided attention," says Lt. Mark Peterson of the State Patrol.

The investigation also found one of the seatbelts in the backseat did not work and the other was tucked under a seat cushion. Phillips was sitting in the backseat.

Grengs continues to recover and is already walking. He hopes to get his halo removed next week. Click here to see KARE's November story on Mitch's rescue and recovery.
