Dad who left infant son outside a strip club talks to KARE 11
Dave Mantor wants to tell you why he went to a St. Croix County strip club Wednesday night and left his 18-month old son in the car for hours while he had a few drinks. "I'm an alcoholic," Mantor said Friday night. "I've been sober for over two years and I had a relapse that night. That is the dumbest thing I've ever done." Mantor says he didn't seek out the Cajun Club bar in Houlton, Wisconsin Wednesday night. He says he was taking a drive, trying to calm himself during a stressful time in his life, when he came upon the bar at about 10:30 p.m. He says when he saw it he decided to go inside and leave his son in the van, sleeping. "Stress got to me after a while. I thought maybe just to calm down I'd have a couple drinks and then leave quick before he woke up and everything would be fine," Mantor said. Mantor either had more than a couple drinks, or lost track of time he says, because at 12:30 am. another patron approached him saying police were outside and wanted to speak to him. "It is embarrassing, this isn't me," Mantor said. "I had a mistake one night and now I gotta pay for how long, forever?" Mantor was arrested on suspicion of neglecting a child at the strip club. His son was taken in by ambulance to a Hudson hospital and looked at for frostbite. Mantor's wife was notified and she picked up her son from the hospital. He was free of any injuries. Now, Mantor's wife Jereme, is vowing to stand by her man. "I forgive my husband, that is what the Lord wants me to do," Jereme Mantor said. The 18-month-old boy is at home with Dave and his wife now. The couple says they have already visited with a social worker and the children are allowed to stay in the home. The county will be re-visiting the couple often in the coming months and weeks. As for Dave Mantor, he says he will return to AA to deal with his alcohol relapse. He also expects to be charged for his crime in St. Croix County, Wisconsin next week.
