If you smell something fishy with Minneapolis drinking water, your nose, knows.
The Public Works Department says it's been getting complaints about water that smells fishy or earthy, and tastes fishy.
The Mississippi River is the source for city water. And it blames smell and taste on spring run-off.
Those who run the water plant say the city catches bacteria and viruses, but it can't entirely eliminate the smelly, bad tasting substances in the water.
Still, Chris Catlin, Water Plant Operations Superintendent estimates special treatments remove 90% of the smell and taste. And despite the unwelcome leftovers, Catlin says "The water's perfectly safe to drink. It meets all the state and federal regulations. In order to help the situation at home, we recommend putting the water in a clear, clean, glass container and storing it in the refrigerator that will tend to dull our senses, or sense perception of the taste and odors."
Besides Minneapolis, Columbia Heights, Golden Valley, Crystal, New Hope, and parts of Bloomington are on the same water system.
