Suspected bank robber leads police on chase through metro
A suspected bank robber is behind bars after a police pursuit through West Bloomington in which the suspect continually showed a gun to officers. The chase lasted just 20 minutes Wednesday afternoon, but it actually raced through four communities, ending with police firing a taser in a quiet, peaceful Eden Prairie neighborhood. "We got a call from inside the bank," Edina Police Sergeant Brian Tholen said. Police say they caught up with their suspect just after 2:30 p.m. not far from the TCF Bank inside the Cub Foods on York in Edina. The chase went through Richfield, down 494 and then down France Avenue in Bloomington. It ended on the southbound ramp to 169 from Pioneer Trail in Eden Prairie. "I heard a lot of sirens, then I heard the crash," David Vagle said. He was one of several people to witness the excitement in the normally quiet neighborhood. The suspect hit a light pole and slammed into a chain link fence. He got out and ran into a wooded area before entering the neighborhood. At least a dozen officers gave chase. "The cops were just running across my front yard at full speed, across the yard with guns out," Bernie Pagac explained. Police tased the suspect five doors down from Bernie's place as Paul Kretchman watch it unfold two feet from his front bay window. "He (the suspect) got up, but he was just so tired from running from way over from the freeway," Kretchman said. Police wouldn't say how much cash was taken, but Vagle was there to watch, as police collected their evidence. "They were stuffing it (cash) it in, handful by handful, into a 3 gallon bag. Looked like a lot of cash to me," Vagle said. FBI agents are looking into whether the suspect arrested today is wanted for any other bank robberies in the metro area.
