Former Vice President Walter Mondale says he now supports Barack Obama for president.

Mondale, who's a Democratic superdelegate, had backed Hillary Rodham Clinton. But Mondale told WCCO-AM on Wednesday that Obama is now the party's nominee, and he supports the Illinois senator.

But Mondale added that he admires Clinton and her campaign. He says she's "opened more space now for the next generation of young women in America to make a difference in the public life of our country."

Mondale also says it's time for the party to unite and get behind Obama. Mondale says he believes Obama "has an excellent chance of winning" in November.

Obama proclaimed himself the party nominee Tuesday night at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
