Caught on tape: Man strikes 80-year-old woman during robbery
For five and a half years, May Vang and her family have run the W&T Market in St. Paul like a neighborhood business. "People who don't have enough money, I'll let it go," said May Vang on Thursday. "I'll have them borrow some stuff until they get paid." But on Monday night, the neighborhood store that trusts its customers was robbed. Vang says a man walked into her store at 604 Western Ave., N., at about 8 p.m. Surveillance video shows the man waving a semi-automatic handgun and demanding money. "I gave him the money," she said. But the video shows that even after the man took the cash he kept waving the gun and yelling. He eventually struck, or "pistol-whipped" Vang across her face with a gun. And then, before he left the store, he turned and struck Vang's 80-year-old mother-in-law across the face. "That time I wasn't thinking about me, I was thinking about her," Vang said about her mother-in-law, Kaying Xiong. "You hit an 80-year-old woman, that's a coward, that's not even a criminal, that's a coward," said Peter Panos with the St. Paul Police Department. Panos said police want to find this man before he strikes again. They worry he will only become more violent with each crime. Meantime, it's business as usual at the W&T Market. Vang said she won't allow the robber's attack to affect her business or way of life. "I'm not afraid of him, if things happen, they happen. I just like what I'm doing," she said.
